I have painted and drawn from a very young age and went to Art College in my teens. After Art College I pursued a career in nursing, married and had a family. When I retired from nursing I took up art again seriously in 2014, having an exhibition in a friend’s gallery that year.
I was initially inspired by railway posters working with light and shadow, colour and the movement which these elements can bring to a painting. Rooftops are particularly inspiring, they speak of people and community and warmth and home especially in older dwellings which are randomly built together giving a delightful patchwork of different coloured roofs. Heaven seems to invade earth during certain moments and in certain lights. I hope to capture some of these moments in my art.
As my painting style has developed since 2014, I would say it tends towards a “Post-Impressionist" Style. I painted quite prolifically in a natural style when I was quite young but after my time at Art College seemed to lose this natural flow. Post-Impressionism employs the use of very bright and complimentary colours, sometimes mixed and sometimes straight from the tube. I tend to be drawn to this particular style though I also paint with some precision and attention to detail. Post-Impressionism tends to be a looser style than my own. The artist Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) would be an example of the Post-Impressionist style.
I totally love painting and now and can get lost for hours in my own studio in the garden.
